Aside from 8, 6, and 5, which I haven't read and can't comment on, that seems a reasonable list, though I would agree that Howl's Moving Castle probably deserves a place on it. The Princess Bride rarely gets brought up in my circle as a love story. Typically it's held up as one of the finest swordfighting films ever made.

Phyllis's comment about collecting Tam Lin stories is interesting. When I was performing a song of the legend, I remember feeling an obsessive urge to do the same, and I've seen it in the few others of my acquaintance who spent time with some version of it. It's as though the rhetoric of Beowulf were masked for May Day with the Song of Taliesin. What is the abyss in it, I wonder?

I've got a little list: Hungry Hearts, by Francine Prose; Traveling actors (one of my favorite things)
Yiddish theatre, playing The Dybbuk, a demon lover who invades the secretly married leading lady. Published in 1983. Howl's Moving Castle, Diana Wynne Jones, reverse beauty and beast, Water For Chocolate, by Laura Esquivel, Mexico, delayed love, magic food. I collect Tam Lin stories and I will have to find Jane Yolen's version. I have:Tam Lin, by Pamela Dean, Thomas The Rhymer, by Ellen Kushner, Winter Rose by Patricia McKillip and Fire And Hemlock by Diana Wynn. All different and wondrous. Thank you for this topic. Long live The Thorn And The Blossom. And more stories to come.

How how do you handle reviews? Well, I read mine. Even the negative ones, partly because I find that I learn from them. When they’re done well, they’re like getting feedback from a critique partner.

I've been working lately w someone at my firm who rips my writing to shreds. My first reaction is, always, to want to hurt him. But, you know, no one else makes me grow, stretches me, the way that he does. I'm not saying it isn't painful. Just saying that I've learned (the hard way) to appreciate it.

Reading this entry, 'Be careful what you wish for' comes to mind. Being able to write more, and sell more, and do public events are something you've talked about for a long time. And you're getting them, BUT--- the timing's a little off in that writing isn't ALL you're doing. It takes the blush off the rose a little, I think. If you have to do a signing on a day when teaching's already exhausted you, the signing may not be all that you want it to be.

I think you're doing great. You've shown us over the past year or so via this blog that you are a persistent go-getter despite your fatigue, so it's only a matter of time that writing WILL be all you're doing.

(Maybe I'm wrong about you wanting to be able to do nothing but write? I apologize, if so, but I'm pretty sure you've indicated that here a few times.)

Dear Margaret,
You honor me with your request. Yes, please share it if you think it would help. You can also let them know that the inspiration for this little piece comes from my own personal dealings with PTSD. The scariest part is the first step in; it gets easier after that. They really aren't alone in their work.
I'll keep you all in my thoughts. And, personally, I don't mind if you use my name. It might help if they know that a real person wrote this, a real person with a name, just like them.

Shannon, this piece resonated. I think it would speak to one or two of my psychotherapy clients. How would you feel about my sharing it with them? I could remove your name if you preferred. I think it would help them to be more clear about their own quests.

In any case, thank you for writing it and sharing it.

Thanks for the Loreena McKennitt - I just love her! I received my copy of "The Thorn and the Blossom" in the mail yesterday, and I look forward to reading it - but I'm saving it for when I'm done taking my Proficiency Exam (comps) for my Masters program (early March)!

Writing is a vocation wide open to envy of every sort, though envy and admiration are two sides of the same coin. I envy Peter Beagle's writing style, Cat Valente's staggering ability with images, and ANYONE with the focus and concentration to sit down and write ten pages at a stretch (which I have come to gather is many writers, but certainly not myself).

And in truth, Ms. Goss has little besides time to envy in other writers. Talent and a unique imagination certainly aren't at issue.

What will envy get you? Usually nothing (or perhaps a blog post). But I've also found that envy lights a fire, sometimes. Catalyzes a change. Forces me to step back and re-prioritize, or look at something from a different angle.

On a separate note, I am REALLY looking forward to The Brides of Rollrock Island (or Sea Hearts). I adore Ms. Lanagan's books. So much so that I spent some time pondering whether or not to pony up for international shipping so I don't have to wait until the US version comes out later this year. As much as it pains me, I think it will have to be done. :)
